Stories Behind the Things

People ask me all the time about my name. For a long time, my market friends called me “Livy,” just assuming I’d named my business after myself. So how does one find words big enough…important enough…to explain how one tiny little throw-away dog gave me the courage to trade in red power suits for red collar flowers?

So, naturally, I named my new business, Livy & Company Handmade, to honor that bond.  Naming my business was just the beginning. I had other things to explain too.

Little symbols. Big meaning.

Each of these icons holds a piece of my story. Click one to discover why it’s here—and why it matters to me.

Why the Bee?

My little bee has been part of Livy & Company since the very beginning, and she’s become a symbol of so many things I love about creating.

When I was taking photos of Olivia for my very first website and branding, she snapped at a couple of carpenter bees buzzing around the yard. It was one of those funny little moments that stuck with me. Since I was making flowers for dog collars at the time, adding a bee to my logo just seemed to make sense.

But the more I learned about bees, the more I realized how much we had in common.

Bees are resourceful, remarkably creative builders, and wonderful communicators. They work together, stay connected to their colony, and even have their own way of telling each other where to find the good stuff. And of course, they’re drawn to colorful flowers. Imagine that!

My little bee reminds me to stay curious, find inspiration in unexpected places, create things with purpose, and never underestimate the importance of connection.

She’s been buzzing around Livy & Company ever since, and I can’t imagine my space without her.

Why the Feather?

Most days are ordinary. But sometimes ordinary and extraordinary can smash into each other in a perfectly magical way.

An ordinary walk through the neighborhood can turn magical if you pay attention to the signs. I believe they’re everywhere .

Roberta had just died. Leukemia. It took my friend like a tornado. She was here one minute and gone 10 days later after relapsing following two bone marrow transplants. One day we were screaming at the top of our lungs in Nashville, TN at a Subdudes concert, and 10 days later we were pulling the plugs.  I was consumed with deep dark black grief.

But on one blustery day, not long after she had left, I was feeling sorry for myself and walk-crying through my neighborhood in St. Petersburg, Florida when Roberta gave me a hug in her special Roberta way.

It came in the form of a little feather, planted on the ground right in front of me while leaves swirled around it, dancing in the wind. I remember thinking how odd that looked. Then I reached down to pick it up.

That feather. That particularly perfect feather.

I knew instantly it was meant for me. Roberta “Bird” Pettish had heard my crying and sent me that much-needed hug. I also think she was saying, “Don’t be a  Goof!” (She was from Michigan and used words like that.)

She wasn’t gone. She had just transformed into something more magical, more beautiful. I call it an angel. You might call it something else.

Since that day, feathers have meant something entirely different to me. They’re little reminders that love doesn’t end when an earth life does. That there’s still a connection between here and there. And that’s why you’ll find a feather on every one of my furry little angels.

Why the Star?

I’ve always had a thing for stars. They make me smile. There’s something about those little bursts of light that makes everything feel a bit more magical.

Over the years, stars have found their way into all sorts of things I create. A giant metal star hangs above by bed. Sometimes I paint little silver ones on my hand-dyed dog collars. Other times they sneak into my illustrations and designs. You’ll even find them at the end of every Fur Fairy wand in Whiskers Thicket.

To me, stars represent imagination, possibility, and that little spark that turns an ordinary idea into something extraordinary.

Why the Flower?

When Olivia first came into my life, she was a shy little thing. My sister Natalie sent her a red flower for her collar as a “welcome to the family” gift. What neither of us realized was that this little flower would become quite the conversation starter.

I don’t know if you’ve ever noticed, but it’s almost impossible to talk to a dog wearing a flower or bow tie in a normal voice. Suddenly it’s, “Ooooooh, don’t you look so pretty!” or “Who’s the cutest little Boo Boo Binkins?” Even the biggest, toughest-looking dog becomes an adorable little sweetie pie.

And for shy little Olivia, all that oooohing and coooing helped her make friends, come out of her shell, and eventually become the confident, fearless little dog she was meant to be.

Somewhere along the way, that little red flower turned pink. Mostly because I love pink, and pink just seemed to fit my colorful, crafty world better.

And that’s how one little red welcome-home flower became the pink flower you’ll see sprinkled throughout Livy & Company.
